Posted: 10 Aug 2010 02:05 AM PDT The Heartea tumbler has been design more for a social purpose than resolving any current design related issues. Meant for the "Nanum" project (a charity that donates 100% of its proceeds to provide educational scholarships to impoverished children), the design adds an emotional element with the glowing heart at the center of the mug. This indicative glow reflects the temperature of the contents in the tumbler; meaning blue for a cold beverage, orange for a warm cuppa tea and red for the piping hot coffee. Retailing at $25 a piece, it's not a bad donation to make when in exchange you're getting this cute interactive mug! Designers: Sangmin Bae & ID+IM Design Lab. Members ---------- |
Posted: 10 Aug 2010 01:33 AM PDT The TAÇA Mug is for those who savor dipped cookies in milk. Till now you probably downsized the jumbo coz the rim of the mug wasn't big enough. This design adds an ingenious touch to a mug with a rim shaped in such a way that you can dunk in the whole cookie, sideways. Now only if you can master the art of putting the cookie fast enough into your mouth….before the soggy end falls off! Designer: Entresuelo1a ---------- |
Posted: 10 Aug 2010 12:08 AM PDT The “Gusset Chair”, even the name is ugly. Now before you think I am being too negative about designer Peter Saloon’s latest creation, keep in mind that he himself described it as “ugly” and confessed that “no thought was given to aesthetic matters…” but that was never the point for his chair design. Saving our planet from unnecessary packaging and shipment waste is the name of the game here. The Gusset Chair is named for the design methodology known as Gusset “ribs” or “rails”. By employing this efficient design feature, the designer was able to envision the making of customizable chairs that could be regionally licensed and distributed based on local preferences, sharply reducing packaging and freight. The felt seating area is un-dyed and sustainable wool and the finish is oil and wax with no VOCs. Made of 100% Richlite®, a post consumer waste paper bi-product and Greenguard certified. “Ugly” and proud of it. Designer: Peter Saloom ---------- |
Posted: 10 Aug 2010 12:03 AM PDT I have a confession; I realize I make far too many movie references in my posts for the beautiful concept designs we receive here at Yanko. The reason to me is clear, so many times in our modern world, the creative minds in the movie industry spark our imaginations and inspire us to shape our realities. Take for example the now iconic “Startac” phone from Motorola, inspired by the communicators of the old Star Trek series. Or how about the “AIRFLITE” by KINZO lighting originally designed by Sir Ken Adams for the movie Dr. Stragelove. That lamp was so part of our memories that former president Ronald Reagan actually asked where it was when first shown the actual Pentagon War Room. Which brings me to our latest submission. Designer C. Darius Delaunay-Driquert has dreamed up a more utopian society where amputees are not bound by the limitations of their handicap, but enhanced by them through bionic prosthetics. The “METIS” connects to the human nervous system and gives an amputee a full 360˚ range of motion, as well as access to virtual dimensions via integrated 3G and Wifi. Now before you jump to the any negative thoughts of how silly a WiFi enabled bionic arm may be, keep in mind that the designer is simply proposing we dream of next step enhancements to the handicapped, instead of simply playing catch up with our current body design. Posted: 10 Aug 2010 12:00 AM PDT Well here it is folks. The be-all, end-all of iPhone 4 cases. This case not only puts an end to “AntennaGate 2010″, but also effectively imprisons your iPhone behind a cage of steel and delrin. Designer Ryan Glasgow brings his meticulously built, hand made creation to market for a reasonable $95 USD. Features include a 304 stainless steel body, hinged lid, elastic band for holding cards or locking the lid in place and delrin fastener housings. No word on its durability so if any of you Yanko readers out there buy one, please drop us a note. Designer: Ryan Glasgow for LtdTools ---------- |
