Measuring Accurately Even in Darkness

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 01:00 AM PST

Now this is clever. The Reading Ruler is a tape measurer with a digital display and reads out the units of measurement. It even works in the dark. For the life of me I can't imagine why we would need to measure anything in the dark unless it's in the dungeons of Malfoy Mansion, but then we would just summon Doby for help no?

Reforest the Planet

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:43 AM PST

The WaterDisxx makes it possible to plant seeds almost anywhere. It provides the seed with everything it needs to grow, and makes reforrestation of desert areas possible in a economical way. It’s designed to be easy to manufacture, transport and installed. The advertising on the product is a good way to fund it and makes it possible for companies to show environmental effort. It’s based on the work of groasis, the international initiative to re-green the planet.

Starry Playground

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:39 AM PST

This unique piece aptly called the Playground is designed for star gazers – children who have an affinity with the sky. The geodesic domes and the whole facade are covered in star shaped cutouts. Day or night, the cutouts illuminate from the sun and moon to create a glowing, surreal atmosphere. Nice idea. Hey, I’m a big kid and I’d love to play in it.

Heatmats for Sidewalks

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:07 AM PST

Let me tell you before I even begin to describe this design that it’s brilliant. There are such things as heated roads (ones that stay warm enough that a certain amount of snow will never even survive its fall), and there are such things as shovels and snowblowers for sidewalks. Why not heaters for sidewalks instead? Do it! Fantastic!

These mats are called the “Heated Outdoor Walkway Mat” and the “Heated Outdoor Stair Mats” and are part of a larger collection of similar mats made for residential areas in the snowier parts of the world. It’s a made-for-everyone solution to keeping you and your family safe from the dangers of ice and snow buildup on your property, leaving instead a slightly larger energy bill for you on your home – a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Each mat comes with its own patented watertight connector cables that connect together creating a single system of snow melting excellence. Each mat can be used individually as well – up to 15 mats (up to 15 amps) can be connected on a single chain. Yes please!

Traditional Korean Switches

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:04 AM PST

Whenever a bit of tiny design draws inspiration from gigantic architecture, it almost never goes wrong – and almost certainly goes so very right. This is an example that’s completely lovely. A light switch that draws inspiration from traditional Korean architecture (and clothing!) These switches (for electricity) are capable of not only switching the lights on and off, they can deliver detailed info about the energy usage of the room they’re installed in via free web or smartphone applications.

Temperature sensors, imaging equipment, and more are available additions to the “nanogrid” structure. That’s what this switch is called, nanogrid. It’s won an award, (see below,) chosen due to its superiority in form, environmental friendliness, usability, and how well the product relates to consumer needs. Well done!

This project is a 2010 Korea Presidential Good Design Award winner!

Electric Motorbikes as Tires

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:03 AM PST

Behold an electric motor vehicle who indeed does fit the mold of “more than meets the eye.” This is no robot though, it’s a compact urban city car, but what’s more is that its rear wheels transform into bikes. Each of these bikes have only a single tire, functioning on the same system as the Segway! The car with the bikes still integrated has a light weight structure, 2 parallel side panels and a bunch of cross panels making the car like a feather yet totally tough.

To separate the bikes from the car, you’ve only to open the rear hood, take the bumper out, set down the stand to keep the car aloft, remove the docking lock, and activate the bike. A couple more features in the car are a solar panel roof, glass panels for side doors, and an overall essence of architecture embedded in the whole structure.

This project is a 2010 Red Dot Design Awards winner!
