The Cycle Generation

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 01:00 AM PST

The Encycle concept isn’t the first bicycle dynamo we’ve seen but it’s the only one we know of that connects to a smartphone. Every rotation gets accounted for and an inbuilt tilt sensor detects the road’s slope and sets the resistance level of the generator accordingly, maximizing efficiency. Needless to say the juice is used for topping up your smartphone & devices. A supporting Encycle app will help chart your course and function as a speedometer etc. What fun!

Phone Loves to Tan

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 12:56 AM PST

The first thing you notice about the Double phone are the solar cells across its facade. The second thing you notice is the 360º hinge.  Pretty cool looking concept with the added benefit of never running out of power as long as the sun is up. Spec wise, the 3.2 inch LCD screen, touch interface and transparent panel for notifications is more than enough to keep up with the big boys in the market.

The Double is a Red Dot Concept Design winning entry.

My What Lovely Curves You Have

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 12:49 AM PST

I f*#&k*ng love this chair! The combination of ash and beech is artfully molded and sanded together to form an incredibly modern and organic piece. Are you kidding me? Look at it. Stare at it. If you don’t think this is gorgeous, something is seriously wrong with you. It’s so distinct. The whole look could be extrapolated into tables, shelves, maybe even a credenza. DO WANT!

IIDA Entry Makes Fresh Water

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 12:43 AM PST

C-Water is one of those concepts that’s too good of an idea not to share. An entry in the Incheon International Design Awards, C-Water boasts water purification possibilities using a simple distillation technique. The power source? The sun. The slim, yet stackable object can float on any calm water surface. Fresh water gets collected in a separate reservoir and the whole thing is compact enough to go portable. Looks like Designboom is spreading the word too.

Case Without Closing

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 12:18 AM PST

Let’s take a look at a design of an object that’s not often thought of as almost an afterthought. This is no afterthought of designer Florian Widmann though, it’s a masterpiece made patented product and presented here today on Yanko Design as just that. Brandless and pure, a case for whatever you’d like to put in it. It’s a case that’ll open all the way around, just like a jacob’s ladder toy opening and closing in a way that seems magical.

The opening mechanism at first appears to be a magnet, but is actually two twisted high performance elastic bands attached to the left and right ends. This elastic is embedded into guiding grooves that’ll make sure your case never comes all the way apart. Check out the video to see it in action.

Shelves Inside Shelves Inside Shelves

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 12:07 AM PST

Take a peek at this neato shelving arrangement. It’s made entirely out of wood, it looks totally nice, and it’s called “Dado.” Marc Haldermann of Dear Bird Design Products has taken the idea of modularity in shelving units and chopped it down to its essential elements, making a selection of box shelves and C-shelves fit precisely in a set of bigger boxes. How super neat! Then, to differentiate from the IKEA shelves (the ones I personally have in my living room), he added a bit of a stand below the whole construct.

Create Energy Stepping

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 12:02 AM PST

This fancy little object goes by the name “Slide” and with it, you can generate energy walking up and down steps. By simply placing your hand upon the green and pushing it along the railing aside the stairs you’re walking on, you’ll generate energy! With that energy, the several arrohead-shaped LEDs in the object are lit so that you might see where you’re going in a power outage or other emergency situation!

So simple! Watch this design spread across the internet now – the most virally ready designs are the same ones that follow the Pop Art jealous critic manifesto: “I could have thought of that” “Yeah, but you didn’t!” Well played, trio of designers.

This project is a 2010 LiteOn design award winenr!
