I Ain’t Afraid Of No Wind

Posted: 10 May 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Southern California beaches are known for their easy going lifestyle and warm weather but you wouldn’t know it from this weekend. Nature must have been pissed about the oil spill in the gulf because she kicked up one hell of a wind storm in Santa Monica. I think I still have sand in my eye but I digress. HJC Design developed a tent-like beach abode called the Surf Shelter designed to withstand the formidable winds of the British coast.

The beach haven features a curvaceous form that creates a captivating interior space to protect users from the capricious British weather.  Crisp highlights are incorporated into a sweeping exterior shell constructed with lightweight composite fabric, helping to create a form that echo's the aqua surroundings.

The Surf Shelter is an eco design that allows energy to be generated through wind and solar power to allow use of small electrical devices at the beach. It is designed to be a sociable area for having barbecue's, sun bathing or relaxing with friends. The energy supply can be used for playing music and keeping the beers cold!

Photovoltaic fabric is utilised to capture the suns energy and provide a charge point for Mp3 players and Mobile phones.  The rigid attachment structure for the roof completes the aerodynamic detailing, immediately evoking images of crashing waves.

Cut to my beach bum friend whom I showed this product to. His only reaction was, “WTF is wrong with just a towel and sunscreen?” Obviously the Surf Shelter wasn’t created for people like him. HJC, send me one please.

Move Over Iron Man

Posted: 10 May 2010 08:54 AM PDT

I just watched Iron Man 2 this weekend so it seems fitting to write about the idea of body enhancements. The Activation Suit is designed with women in mind, prepping them for the ultimate work out while minimizing fatigue and injury. The suit electronically stimulates muscle groups to relax, “stretch”, and intensify work outs. The entire surface is touch activated enabling targeted training. And of course no bionic woman would be complete without the ability to record and analyze their regimen.

I love the idea and would give damn near anything to have this come to reality. I’m a freak when it comes to work out gear but I’ve also picked up some tidbits from trainers. I know that artificially stimulated muscles don’t really do anything to enhance a work out. It’s just your muscle reacting to stimuli. It’s great for physical therapy but doesn’t do much in the way of gaining muscle or losing weight. I also know that targeted training isn’t necessarily a good idea. You may want to strengthen an area but generally, improving the overall tone of the body is much better to keep those inner gears well oiled and spinning. I’m curious as to why this couldn’t work for men too. I mean we have the exact same bodies, with the exception of a few accoutrements.

Good Hair

Posted: 10 May 2010 08:44 AM PDT

Here’s an incredibly simple hair dryer called the Shaker. The entire shell is made from ABS plastic that can be removed and recycled. The simple construction also makes it much easier to clean. The rear even hides the power cable. Designs like this may seem arbitrary but I could easily see this in developing countries. However, I need the latest and greatest. You know, 3 heat settings, cool blast, ceramic ionizer, the works.

Power, Luxury Meet Mother Nature

When you think of Bentley, most people conjure up images of refinement, grace and traditional craftsmanship. But since 1998, when VW took over as Bentley Motors’ new owners, Bentley has shifted into high gear and moved away from the gilded luxury barges that barely differentiated them from their previous owners Rolls Royce. Now designer Gabriel Tam, at the Royal College of Art, has re-imagined an even more aggressive Bentley. Not by adding more horses or gold plated emblems, but by tackling the issue of aerodynamics. Using the specialized EXA evaluation software PowerFlow, Gabriel was able to achieve an almost perfect drag coefficient. This “Bentley Aero Ace – Speed VI” concept is a celebration of Bentley Motors illustrious racing heritage and looks to inspire Bentley designs for a new generation of greener and meaner British muscle cars, while maintaining enough luxury to make a Russian billionaire joke on his vodka. The vehicle features innovative designs such as:

  • Double wishbone suspension integrated within the adjustable front spoiler / aerofoil
  • Air intake for electric motors cooling, feeding out to twin rear heat exhaust ducts
  • Integrated diffusers aid air flow and create down force
  • Semi enclosed wheel with heat ducts for lower drag

All Eggs In One Toaster

Posted: 10 May 2010 04:11 AM PDT

What makes Bang Bang (I love the name) different from other egg steamers is that it works more like a pop-up toaster. You place your eggs in the designated holes (inspired by the Sponges & Corals in the movie Finding Nemo) and put sufficient water in the holding tray; lower the egg lever and wait for the steaming action. After they're done, the eggs pop up, just like your crispy brown smiling toast would! Now that would be a classy combo!

Extended Life Of A Toilet Paper Core

Posted: 10 May 2010 03:25 AM PDT

Do you really care about your toilet paper? Is its lifecycle really worth a mention? Do we want to discuss toilet-habits on YD? So many questions…and there is only one answer for this… "Day Re"! The deal is that once you're done with the tissue part of the toilet paper roll, you toss the brown core into the trash, right? However if you buy a Day Re toilet roll…you just extended its life and purpose on earth! The core comes with a sticker tab that unfolds to a memo pad. Good enough to take daily or weekly notes! Question is; do we want toilet paper to be like a coconut tree and use every bit of it? Or do we just want some soft tissues to wipe our bums clean, and that's the end of its story! You decide.

5 Zaras Tall

Posted: 10 May 2010 01:21 AM PDT

Welcome to the flagship store “Zara” of the Inditex Group, a group known for several brands of fabulous fashion clothing.* What this post is about is the installation they’ve got sitting in from of their Milan store. It’s five meters tall. It’s white, colorful, and magnificent. AND it’s designed by UNStudio, a group Yanko is DEFINITELY guilty of loving for their excellence in architecture. Behold this mighty column!

*Massimo Dutti, Pull and Bear, Oysho, Uterqüe, Stradivarius and Bershka are brands under the Inditex Group label. Just incase you wanted to know.

This installation is in place to coincide with Milan’s International Furniture Fair. It is five meters tall, has a diameter of 4.85 meters, and has a total surface area of 130m^2. Large! It’s made of coated aluminum and is lit from the inside using an array of LED lights. Inside the store’s windows are two smaller structures similar in dimensions. Cute minis!

BONUS: I’m just guessing on this, but – SOON they’ll have agreed to let me live inside the structure after they’re done using it for the fair! Hooray! I plan on floating across the ocean in it. What better way to be the first person to float aimlessly around the world than to do it in such a magnificent piece of sculptural architecture? Yessir!

Tiny Helicopter Defense System

Posted: 10 May 2010 12:55 AM PDT

What’s 12 inches tall, 24 inches long, and gives you tips on boat invaders? Not space aliens. Not a flying dog. A tiny helicoper spy by the name of “Crows Nest Anti-Pirate UAV!” It will let you know, right away! If there’s any pirates on the way. Meant to fly rings around your ship as you float along the sea, minding your own business. If it detects anything large enough to constitute a boat inside it’s defense perimeter, it sounds the horn!

Pirate attack!

Because modern pirates use tactics that include speed-boat attack swarm speed, you need something a lot more wild than Johnny Seagoggles looking out while he’s not playing Gameboy. You need this Crows Nest helicopter baby to fly auto around on the watching tip!

After the alarm is sounded, the UAV observes the attacking ship(s), using lovely visual camera technology to report back to the mothership while they prepare for war or running away!

Don’t get caught on the Hi-Cs without it!

Fishy Muscle Makers

Posted: 10 May 2010 12:02 AM PDT

I’ve got to tell you the name of this project first and foremost. Designed by Sun ho, Sin, this project is called “Barbellfish.” It is so very close to the word “Babelfish” that it cannot be denied. Before we discuss the similarities between the fish and this project, we’ve got to discuss this project’s aim: to make it simpler to lift weights! Rather than attaching them to a bar from the sides, these allow for a top-loading weight.

As you can see from the illustration, these weights attack from the top, clicking into place in a quite simple way. Now as for the name: I’m sure you’ve got some knowledge of Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” in which the “Babel fish” is introduced. This fish is inserted into the head of a host through the ear, translating for its host all language to an understandable sound. Kinda like the most epic internet translator of all time, the Yahoo! Babelfish.

But what’s that got to do with the weight? Well! I can only guess since it is not explained by the designer, but if I were a bettin’ man I’d wager a bit on the universal applicability of each weight to a bar.

Squish!
