Winards Rejoice! We Got Light!

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 08:45 AM PDT

My mind is BLOWN. I’m not a wine drinker but I have lots of friends who swear by it. Let’s call them winards. The Light Sommelier interactive light is so urber cool, even my winard friends would enjoy it. The action of turning and dimming lights is transposed into wine drinking gestures. As the bottle tips into the glass, the glass lights up. As you tip the glass over, the light dims. You can even vary the intensity by how much wine you “pour”. All done with simple proximity detectors and gyros. Loves it. Happy Monday.

Empty Gas Cans?

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 08:37 AM PDT

We’ve all done it before. You’re getting ready to fire up that grill but unsure if you have enough butane. Just in case, you look at the can, which by the way is totally solid and encased in metal. You shake it like polaroid picture for good luck and hope for the best. A better gas can would be the Empty Mark. By integrating a layer at the bottom of the can to appear thru a transparent window, you can easily see when you’re almost out of butane. Smart but does it work?

Saving Soda Twister

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 12:20 AM PDT

This little object right here is called the “Legcap.” It’s designed by a really quick-thinkin fellow by the name of Jaeseok Han. It’s made for your bottles of water, bottles of soda pop, bottles of whatever you’ve got in a bottle. Because bottles of liquid, after opening, are often stored head-up, they lose their luster. Soda becomes flat because of the imperfect seal of the twist cap. What does the Legcap do? It flips the bottle on it’s head, sealing with the liquid itself the freshness. Sittin on it’s head, the bottle keeps its cargo safe!

The bottle then, sitting there all weird looking, is appreciated by all who glance upon it. The liquid inside, say soda, stays carbonated. Carbonic acid is kept within the container. The container is then, with this new top, much easier to open and close, making it accessible to everyone.

NOTE: This might not work, as the reason soda goes flat actually has to do with pressure that’s lost after the first opening of the bottle. Anyone care to elaborate? Hint: vapor pressure.

One Wrench to Rule Them Each

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 12:14 AM PDT

Or twist them all. In the dark! That’s what designer Junjie Zhang has on the brain, that intention in this project. This is a wrench that’s got several settings in one single piece of non-moving metal. One hunk. Tell me about this project, if you know about something similar, because it seems too simple to be true. One wrench, one shape that allows for several bolts to be twisted. Twisted all the way tight.

Now this designer just had another design featured on Yanko: the V Lock v-shaped keyhole slip, made for easy fitting of the key in the hole. This too, I thought was too simple to not have been invented before. But nay! It was new! And in 5 days the post had visits in the 5-digit range.

Now look at this wrench. I’ve got a wrench that fits several bolts now, it utilizes a screw at the head for easy adjustment of the wrench, which has two parts. The one we’re looking at here is one piece. One single piece. That cuts down on the amount of different molds that have to be made, maybe even cuts down on the amount of production time.

What do you think of it?

Primaries in Routing

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 12:02 AM PDT

Lemme ask you first if you know exactly what a CNC machine is? Do you? When I first had to write a post about one, I had to look it up! But I did a little reading, a little learning, then I knew what it was – something I WANTED. Take a look at all the things Yanko’s written about that have to do with a CNC machine and you’ll notice that it just doesn’t come up that often. But here one is: the “RedBlueCNC,” designed by Nick Santillan. This one’s spiffy. It’s got blue, it’s got red, it’s got yellow, it’s got the ability to take commands.

It’s modular, that means you’ve got a lot of options. Arrange it how you like. Adapters can be attached, tool-heads can be attached. Go nuts.

The following paragraph I used for the last CNC we published, and since this designer is the SAME GUY, I figure it’s just as good, ya?

CNC stands for "computer numerical controlled" and today it's used for a number of machines including wood routers, milling machines, water jet cutters, oxy-fuel, surface grinders, and my favorite, 3D printing. The one mister Nick Santillan's made here is for routing.

That last one was mainly wood, this one’s plastic. And if you’ll take a look at the photos below, you can see that it’s using some sort of writing utensil too, so the versatility of this thing is high. Take a peek at both this one and the wood one and tell me how many you’re gonna order.
