A Fair Warning

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 01:00 AM PST

Signal Lock is an LED warning light that fits within the frame of a bicycle and comes in real handy when you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere. Sure we can move the bike off the road to avoid an incident, but this is being better safe than sorry. It would be hip to repair your cycle with a LED warning light beaming your presence and distress from a 100 meters away anyways.

Grasp and Water, Your New ZEN Players

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 01:00 AM PST

We are so fixated with the "i" prefix that we rarely see anything beyond the Apple realm. Its designers like Li Qing who dares us to think beyond the "i" and open up our minds to the Zunes and Zens of the world. Featured here is not one but TWO ZEN MP3 player concepts: Grasp & Water. We love them for their fluid minimal look and intuitive design. The nano and Shuffle are nice but there are still some wonderfully designed options out there.

Designer: Li Qing

ZEN Grasp

“A natural form derives from pressing your thumb on a soft material within your grasp.”

ZEN Water

“Shadow of ripples forms beneath, from a bowl of water.”

Stealthy Faucets

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 12:10 AM PST

It’s not every day you see bathroom fittings inspired by stealth aircraft but hey, why not? The sharp angles compliment the fluidity of water. The Stealth Collection looks like it came out of a secret design center in the Pentagon, but it’s actually from award winning manufacturer GRAFF. This ultra modern faucet is capable of a 1.5-2.2 gallon/per minute water-saving flow rate and comes available in polished chrome or Steelnox satin nickel finishes. My personal favorite is the Steelnox satin. STUNNING, just absolutely stunning.

Play Inside the Sun to Learn About Fusion

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 12:05 AM PST

SOL – an interactive spatial installation staging the origin of solar energy. In an immersive environment the principles of nuclear fusion can be experienced in a narrative and playful way. Entering a bright and glistening corpus, the visitor experiences the darkness inside the sun and watches the chaotic motion of protons. Thankfully, radiation not included. Interacting with the particles causes them to fuse and produce energy which manifests as light bursts inside "the core" as well as a rising light level on the outside.

The piece was commissioned to explore the principles of nuclear fusion inside the sun. The choice to take a staging approach rather than a factual one created a multichannel installation using:

Openframeworks (Camera Tracking),
Gestalt (Generative Particle Simulation)
Creative Computing (DMX Light Control)
Supercollider (Dynamic Sound Output)

The visitors can influence the particles on a table projection and start a chain reaction of nuclear fusions, the resulting energy is mirrored via DMX-controlled LED clusters under the table as well as an array of DMX-controlled fluorescent lights on the outside, supported by a dynamic soundscape consisting of atmospheric sounds and energy bursts.

Big Sweater, Small Sweater

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 12:05 AM PST

Let me be the one to let you in on this magically amazing idea for clothing tags. What Yong Jin Kim’s idea consists of is a tiny version of whatever clothing item the tag is attached to printed on the tag that’s attached. What does this mean for you and your kids? It means that you (and/or your kids) will be able to take your entire clothing collection (provided you only buy this one brand) and dress up paper dolls the same as you to your heart’s content! Hooray!

What an excellent idea for working out clothing combinations with paper instead of the the rigorous activity of picking them out yourself. Anyone remember “The One Where Noone’s Ready?” Just like that, only this way you’ll be able to do it without pulling out the whole closet.

For Turtle Carrying

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 12:03 AM PST

If you’re the sort of person who works with and in the sea, you’re probably aware of sea turtles. If you are aware of sea turtles and you’re the sort of person who works with and studies them, you’ll be interested in Tuto: a mobile workstation for studying and analyzing sea turtles. It’s basically a completely fabulous stretcher made exclusively for turtles, a mobile workstation that helps optimize activities such as body measurements, blood and tissue sampling, and tagging with Inconel tags.

Tuto allows for correct work posture for the user and immobilizes the sea turtle to maximize control and keep both the workers and the turtles as safe as possible. It is hoped that the very development of this project will raise awareness of the animals and the workers in the field, growing knowledge on the subject in the world and generate more support for it in the process. Sea turtle safety forever!

Hearing Spaces

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 12:01 AM PST

Presenting the ICC Kids Program 2010 “What Sounds Do We Hear?”, held at the NTT Intercommunication Center [ICC]. It’s a space that focuses on sounds that we’d otherwise only casually encounter in our everyday life. This exhibition asks the questions “What is it that our ears hear and what kind of information do we receive? How is "hearing" different from "seeing"?” This space is composed of 82 wavy shaped cloths hanged at 250mm clearance in a space of changing shape. Fabulous.

The exhibition space (CH=3m) is divided “like a cave” into 6 individual spaces by the cloth overhead. Each of these places has scattered light as provided by the cloth making magnificent the light already available in the space before the exhibition. In that this space is separated by such movable materials, such breakable bonds, the stations are separate but one, the same way that our everyday experience with sound is one. “People explore the cave while feeling the sign of the next exhibition and finding out their interest one after another.” Lovely.
