Watch What You Do

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 08:55 AM PDT

Is there a lot of hustle and bustle in your office or are people stationary? These questions sparked an interesting experiment at the Copehagen Institute of Interaction Design. Sidetrack is a table that draws patterns to reflect movement within an environment, specifically targeting certain areas or people. The mechanics consist of an old printer and B&O turntable. The more erratic patterns reflect a highly interactive space. A minimal one denotes a room full of people sitting quietly with their headphones on, barely moving. Which one are you?

BMW Gets High

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 03:55 AM PDT

Well we’ve been here before, many times over. BMW calls it “cross fertilization”, but “brand shifting” is a term I prefer to use to describe when a company famous for one type of consumer product, in this case automobiles, uses their brand power to help sell another unrelated product (airplanes). There was the lust worthy Hermés helicopter, the Versace Lamborghini, the entire Porsche Design collection and let’s not forget the Audi yacht.

Now it’s BMW’s turn once again. Not satisfied with just clothing, bicycles, luggage and even headphones, BMW has turned their minimalistic gaze on the private jet airplane industry. Collaborating with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer, BMW DesignworksUSA brings us the Phenom 100 and 300. A mostly prototypical jet with one unique feature, a BMW inspired interior. Not that BMW interiors have ever been described as “inspired”, but this interior does a fine job of classing up a space that usually sees luxury arrive in the form of tacky limousine style interiors. Oddly, seat belts were not a design consideration for a company enjoying a flawless auto safety record.

Dots of Fire

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 02:13 AM PDT

Now you too can get all of your temps in dot form! Yay! This concept is a faucet and it’s name is “Tempdot.” The quick and simple reasoning for this is that there’s dots on top of the faucet, dots that both activate the water flow and control the temperature of that water at the same time. Simply drag your finger across the neck of this lovely lady, lift where you want the temperature to reach, and wait for water! To turn off again, just a little bump will do.

The alternate title of this post is Dots of Ice. That’s because these dots can deliver either. Made by a repeat designer here at Yanko, Jaeseok Han, this faucet is simple, nice to look at, and to me it seems pretty reasonable. It reduces the amount of metal that’s got to be used, and the lights on top are said to be recharged by the hot water flow through the system. How nice? How nice.

Key System Deluxe

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 02:00 AM PDT

The title of this project is “Cucampre – key holders and hooks” and it’s for all of your keys. Every single one of your keys. You’re going to get them organized, and you’re going to make them look so very nice. Sounds excellent, yes? I think so! Designed to be a line of hooks and key chain holders to help organize your keys in an unusual, helpful, and aesthetically pleasing way. Slip, slide, and modularize your keys for great glory!

There’s these metal back pieces, the holders, that come is several different colors and shapes that include a couple, car, house, heart, and more. Then there’s the little black bits that the keys slip onto using rings. These bits fit into the holders, and the holders display and organize in this lovely simple way!

Crisp, Sparkling Bottled Air

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 12:43 AM PDT

I remember as a kid watching the comedy farce SPACEBALLS with Mel Brooks and cautiously giggling at his environmental joke, as he cracked open a can of “Perri-Air” to get a quick oxygen fix while on his off-world colony. A lot has changed since those innocent 80s I suppose. Like referring to the 80s as “innocent” or how we made jokes about our dwindling oxygen supply here on Earth. Well, it’s 2010 people and clean oxygen levels on this planet have moved from the comedy realm, straight into tragedy. Designer Pedro Gomes has taken up the cause with his latest design dubbed “o3 – The Product You Don’t Want to Have!”. With pollution levels around the globe continuing to rise and Icelandic volcanos clogging up our air currents, it’s no wonder we need to start thinking of immediate solutions to this growing problem. As a product, o3 is not to be taken too seriously. What is to be taken seriously, is the awareness of the issue and what we will end up having to resort to if this pattern continues.

Enhancing ESP With Music Just To Relax

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 12:16 AM PDT

What the Visual Music Device tries to do is extract useful song information, like rhythm, tempo and beats and converts it to fascinating visual representations, in a bid to soothe and relax you. More for a meditative mind or those into yoga or something! The visual aid features drops of water (kinda like the lava lamp) that float up and down the tank in sync with the music being played on hand. Wonder if it will have a hypnotic effect as well!

The Unbelievable Moveable Lamp

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 12:03 AM PDT

Hey where’d that lamp go? Oh there it is, too high for me to reach! Lurch! Will you come over here and pull the lamp down a bit so I can push it over to the other side of the room here? Thank you. Yes, it’s the “Bewegeleuchte,” aka the Moveable Lamp. Brought to you by the fabulously intelligent designers over at Dua. This is the lamp you want when you live in one gigantic studio apartment where you also do works of art.

This lamp is attached to four cords, each of these cords attached to a pulley and a counterweight. When you want to move the lamp, you move it with a bit of pressure, up, down, left, right, diagonal, backward, forward, anywhere you want. And there it will stay. Any place at all.

I remember seeing a lamp similar to this once, one that only went up and down and stopped. I thought it was undeniable genius. I think that now again here too!

BONUS: Actually, not bonus, just part of the excellence of the design: the lampshade containing the light contains also wood shavings that create a “pleasant and natural ambience.” Because this sort of thing is by its nature arbitrary, each lamp shade is unique. Neat!
