Six Sided Images

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 08:06 AM PDT

CubeBrowser is a six-sided digital, display cube that connects to online databases like Flickr.com. You’re able to move through thousands of image-sets by turning and shaking the small cube in space. The pictures are grouped by tags. Horizontal turns change images, while vertical turns change to other tag sets. CubeBrowser unfolds an awe-inspiring trip through the hidden realms of online databases and provides a unique way of navigating by tag associations.

The control is accomplished by performing manual actions on the object, which creates a playful way of discovering image collections. Ludwig Zeller finished the CubeBrowser as his diploma thesis in “Audiovisual Media” at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne.

Wrangler Asks You to Let Go

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 08:01 AM PDT

That jeans company you and I love the most, Wrangler, is about to do something rather unorthodox. They’re going to ask you to Stop Thinking. I don’t just mean turn into a goofball, no, rather let go of your mapped-out world and allow your mind and body to take part in a wild journey into the unknown. It’s a challenge. Four people from the public, in the UK specifically, are going to be asked to drop everything (except their passport) and rock with Wrangler into the outer limits.

It’s a challenge. Wrangler’s known for fantastic jeans made tough enough for a real live cowboy but comfortable enough to wear for four years almost every day non-stop (seriously, I’ve done this.) But this isn’t about ease or comfort, nay! It’s about allowing yourself to let go.

This enjoyment of the world campaign is called “We Are Animals” and the main message is to “Stop Thinking.” You bet. It takes place in the UK this September (2010) in the form of several top secret events. Participants must meet these basic requirements:

1.They will need a valid passport (their own)
2.They will need to be healthy enough to pass a basic medical (touch toes, cough three times)
3.They will need to drop everything at a moment's notice (no consulting the diary)
4.They will need to Stop Thinking

And, AND! The adventure starts today, the 16th of August! Check it out by visiting the Stop Thinking landing page. Then if you’ve got too many holes in your jeans and want to be in spic-top condition for when you’re running around in these challenges, visit Wrangler Europe for some new threads.

NOTE: While you’re thinking about running wild here, I want you to also think about how all of this applies to your everyday design work. When you’re working on a project, especially when it’s a conceptual work like we feature here on Yanko, always remember to allow yourself to let go. It is the people who allow themselves to create projects that go over the line that find the ones that stay right at the edge. This is where brilliance sits.

A New Lease On “Light”

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 08:00 AM PDT

I like looking at the Posh Lamp as a design exercise. What would normally be a run-of-the-mill portable light is elevated to something austere and “posh” just by framing it in chrome and steel. The lamp is composed of 20 LEDs with a 3-way switch. Couldn’t get any simpler than this. Reminds me of a trend I’ve seen lately; objects seemingly made anew by fortunate mash-ups. Look around your house. See anything that might have been two become one?

Stand Up And Retract Your Pens

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 01:32 AM PDT

Upright & retract: the two new mantras for a dowdy marker pen; too amusing and cute! What we have here is the Upstanding Retractable Markers, a set of sketch markers that stay upright (think Weeble Wobbles) and have a retractable nib. This saves you the trouble of leaking nibs, but I seriously recommend a cap for keeping the color-stick dust-free and moist. Somehow the idea of pens lined upright on a desk makes me wonder, how many will become Humpty Dumpty and have a great fall!

Twisted Sound

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 01:07 AM PDT

Twisted Speakers, just like their name need to be actually twisted to be used. Born out of the frustration of the limited sound range from Isaac Teece's laptop and MP3 player, this Bluetooth portable set support better sound quality and range. They charge via an induction charging station and twist to switch on and off, and to adjust the volume. You can scatter them about in a small area or get ‘top-up’ speakers (that sync to your other speakers) for spreading them around the house. What I really dig is their Bose-esque look with neater lines and finish.

Writing Braille Anywhere…

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 01:00 AM PDT

The problem with writing Braille is that you need the proper equipments, namely a Braille Board and writer, which can get quite bulky to carry around. This means writing jiffy memos or taking short notes is not an easy task for the blind! The Braille Stapler looks at resolving the issue by providing a handy instrument that can be pocketed and used anywhere. This six-button device includes a space button and functions tab for controlling the size of the Braille. Moreover the design expedites the "writing process" that need not be written/read in reverse. More power of communication for the blind!

Rolling Out with Heat

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 12:10 AM PDT

Let me tell you something. I’m at the age where I’m looking into saving space at the same time as I’m growing OUT of the life of a college student. You know what that means? It means I’m trying to collect items for my living space that will last, and not just be convenient for me (and my tiny, growing family) in the meantime. Thusly, I’m looking very intently at this project right here: the “Electrolux Invico.” It’s a concept by designer Njegos Lakic in which this device both has the ability to prepare a warm meal AND be put completely away, leaving that extra space when I need it.

The Invico is a compact heating plate that heats in a fabulously unique way when you’re hungry and can completely slide down and away when you don’t need it. The heating surface is made of a special non-melt silicone that due to its flexible nature can be rolled down under your workspace. This heating surface operates only when in contact with metal, making it both safe and versatile.

And it has a snazzy control panel! You dictate the temperature, time, and have access to an online cookbook with recipes and suggestions for how to most effectively make use of your Invico.

Hot!

First Class Bus for All

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 12:03 AM PDT

Let me share with you a moment of personal experience. It’s about busses. All my life I’ve ridden busses, busses to school, busses to downtown, but never, until I visited England, did I realize the important role busses played (and play!) in the lives of EVERYONE in the world (except for those rare folks who live so far away from roads). The moment I realized the importance of public transport, the moment I sat on a bus and realized what was happening, a light turned on in my head. A light turned on in the head of designer Jonny Hassall, too, and this project is the result!

The aim of this bus project by Jonny Hassall is to create a first class experience for every single rider of every single bus. Not only for those that are turned off by today’s crammed atmosphere in the more populated areas of the world, but for those who MUST ride the bus to survive.

For this project a shell was needed as it is an interior design only – the bus used was a Alexander Dennis Enviro 200 (8.9M) which currently seats 29 people. Inside this NEW design a simple curved frame that can hold either 1 person in a relaxed/reclined position or 6 people sitting up. Using this curve, 21 adults can sit on this bus at once with an additional 12 being able to use the post seating and ANOTHER 12 children being able to share the main seats with their parents.

Seats are aimed outward, giving the riders a personal experience traveling. Near the back of the bus, there’s a 4 person section with seats pointing toward eachother for those who want to have a chat during the ride. The entire interior is designed with leather, polished wood flooring, plush carpeting, and glossy plastics. The entire interior has also been designed with cleanliness in mind, each item chosen for their ability to be quickly de-dirtied. Luggage areas include the doors and under seats. Steps and buggy platforms extend from the doors with strip lighting.

By making this entire bus a pleasurable experience, Hassall hopes to attract more people to public transport, thus saving the environment.

One Gigantic Talking Table

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 12:02 AM PDT

The designers at KINZO have bestowed upon the world a gigantic table. This gigantic table is designed and executed by KINZO for Ernst & Young, a group that hates hitting the toes of the people they have meetings with. It’s a huge table, one that depending on your perspective looks like, quote, “a starship, a deep-sea ray or a hydrofoil.” It’s an epic atmosphere for epic meetings, making whoever’s in the meeting seem quite epic.

AMPLE legroom, so much legroom, the most legroom you’re ever going to see in a giant table such as this. Fifteen people are able to sit around this giant comfortably. The structure of the table’s based on a circular beam, the inner ring supporting the cantilevered table surfaces. That all means its singular. Like it’s a wondrous oneness of perfection.

And man, there’s four flush-mounted “media tanks” that hide cables and provide power and network access for all the futuristic devices. This is the future. The future of talking over giant tables.

ALSO NOTE: the building you see in the gallery below is the location where the table is, that fantastic building where Ernst & Young do business. Fits the aesthetic, yes?
